Artist Statement: Hector Galvez
On display at Wild Iris Books through April 23, 2008
I was born in Chile and I grew up in Miami, where an older cousin introduced me to comic books, graffiti and hip-hop. I've been doing art ever since I can remember, though lately I feel like things have really started picking up.
My technique centers on the idea of using layers to create depth and line to emulate organic shapes. I'll often prepare a painting surface by writing on it or adding collage, or even using it as a palette for another painting. Under every layer of surface paint, there are probably two of three layers underneath.
My pieces are done using mixed media, which allows me to produce different effects and paint quicker. Every piece is different in its execution, and makes the painting process less mundane.
My recent pieces have included much more illustration, and the one
cohesive element has been the use of line. Another aspect of my recent paintings is the use of bright colors.
I'm a cheapskate artist who likes to paint large pieces and loves
being involved in as many aspects of preparing a piece as possible.
