Friday April 11 @ 8pm
$5 - $10 sliding scale at the door

If you know Q, you love Q.  And she needs our help.  Early in March, Quintina tore her Achilles tendon and had to have surgery.  This means for the 12 weeks after that, she hasn't been and won't be able to work.  Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that bills need to be paid.

Now we aren't asking you to just hand over money for nothing.  This is going to be an EVENT as only Q can do.  She's involved with a new group called Music of the People (M.O.P.) and they are all showing up.  As I understand it, this means not only the sultry voice of Quintina but multiple singers and a rapper will be here to entertain us!  It should be a great night and it is all to help a great person.

We are asking for $5 - $10 at the door although we won't refuse if you want to hand us a $20 or $50 or more.  See you there!

Thursday April 17 @ 7pm
Free and open to the public

Wild Iris Books is hosting a free screening of "Not For Sale"; a documentary film about human trafficking. The film will be followed by a brief presentation and a round of discussion / Q&A. This event starts at 7pm and is open to the public.

This presentation is brought to you by the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
www.stophumantrafficking.org

quick facts:

Human trafficking is modern day slavery.

There are 2 types of H.T.: sexual and labor.

600,000-800,000 persons are trafficked over international borders every
year.

75,000 - 85,000 are trafficked over American borders every year.

80% of human trafficking victims are women and children.

At least 50% of all human trafficking victims are children.

Florida is the number one state as far as the number of trafficking cases occurring in the U.S.

Come to this powerful event and learn what you can do to help end modern day slavery.

Lylly and Cheryl have given me permission to make this announcement.  Probably so they won't get blamed for writing this email and all its attempts at humor.  In their either infinite or questionable wisdom, they have promoted me to store manager!  Don't worry.  Lylly and Cheryl will still be around.  They'll just be busy dreaming up the big improvements and leaving me to manage and improve upon the day-to-day.  Over the next few months, you will be seeing lots of changes in the store, cafe, webstore and even these e-mails.  Can you feel the excitement?!

I'm going to be around the store a lot more . . . ok, that's not true.  I lived here before the promotion.  But I am here a lot. Feel free to stop by and say hello.  I can also be reached at jen@wildirisbooks.com.  And if you are offering to buy me coffee, I might even e-mail you back!  ;-)

Arroz con Poesia presents a special series of Spanish poetry. Featured Poets are:

Feb 2: Alicia Genovese (Argentina)
Feb 23: Victor Jordán-Orozco (Colombia)
Mar 22: Juan Carlos Galeano (Colombia)
April 5: Ericka Ghersi (Perú)

About Victor Jordán-Orozco:

If you haven't experienced The Original Woman, you do not want to miss this mind scrambling word smith.  A native of North Carolina, this "original" woman confesses, "I have to tell the truth.  I'm not really a poet.  I'm a people's soldier.  I only use poetry as a tool to mobilize the people."  She takes pride in her body by teaching the youth and reminding adults to "love your body."  To learn more about this empowered revolutionary goddess, visit her website at www.theoriginalwoman.com.

Lacey and Kylie of ThirdEyeSpoken will open the show so don't be late!

This event is co-sponsored with ThirdEyeSpoken.

WARNING: This is not ya' mama's poetry!! She's one of the most intense national touring poets in the United States. Prepare to be on fire....if you can take the heat.

"a charming acoustic spitfire . . .with a kick-ass stage presence." - Curve Magazine

Julie Loyd is the star of her own one-woman folk-rock show. She uses her movement experience to step inside her songs, contorting, kicking, and undulating to the beat of her own percussive guitar playing. Dynamic and gutsy, Julie Loyd's music comes across best on stage. Come see what all the excitement is about at Wild Iris this Saturday!
